How To Convert Video For iPod

Getting home videos to play on your iPod used to involve downloading specialized software that would convert your video into an iPod-compatible format. It caused some confusion among iPodders, but thankfully Apple have solved the problem. Here’s how to convert video for iPod the easy way.

  1. Download iTunes 6.0.2 first.
  2. Add your video to the library (File -> Add To Library).
  3. Click on ‘Videos’ under the source menu.
  4. Right-click on your video.
  5. Select and click ‘Convert Selection for iPod’.
  6. iTunes will create an iPod-compatible version of the video and add it to your video collection.

No sound? Sounds strange … are you using the latest version of iTunes? Have you tried to convert your music with 3rd party software?

I have the same problem – I have several videos that play fine in iTunes but when I convert them to m4v’s to play on the ipod I end up with a video with no sound.

It seems to be happening with all MPGs.

    I’m using iTunes 6.0.4.2

I just checked and the samething happens when I try to convert using Quicktime – so no iTunes involved – open the MPG in QT and convert to m4v and then play the resulting file in QT – no sound

I too am getting no sound on my mpg conversions. Anyone know of another program to convert mpg’s?

  8. Adam Says:

I had the exact same problem. Apparantly MPG files are “muxed” which means the sound and video strems are intertwined so iTunes/Quicktime can only see the video (hence no sound).
Streamclip will fix this problem and is available (for free) from the link below.

    http://www.squared5.com/

Just open your mpg in Streamclip, click file>Export to Quicktime
Select the MPEG4 encoder and hit enter. Select the file destination and you’ll have the same file but in MOV format. You can now use iTunes/Quicktime to convert this MOV file into an iPod compatible version.

i was wondering if you demuxed a movie, would the sound file be separate and then after the video was converted, the separated sound file could be interlaced back into one file?

Thank you so much guys for having done all the hard work in working this out for me!!.

I still cant belive that they can market the ipod and itunes as able to easily convert movie files to a file recognisable in ipod, then, not give you the software that actually does this.

How does the person who ISN’T so PC literate deal with it??
    i think it sux!!!
